“The Universe is real, but you can’t see it. You have to imagine it”- Alexander Calder
“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” – J.K Rowling
“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.”- Mark Twain
I believe imagination is both beautiful and dangerous. It can lead to the most wonderful art and the most brilliant ideas, but within the “what if” mentality is the possibility of crippling anxiety when pondering situations that are out of our control. E.g. “what if I humiliate myself during this presentation” or “what if I start dating and get my feelings crushed”.
As a musician and someone just starting out in photography, I understand the importance of imagination and encourage it wholeheartedly. However, I’ve also come to realise that sometimes we have to be in the moment, otherwise we give air to thoughts and self talk that distracts us from the task at hand or discourages us from challenging ourselves. It is important to be conscious enough to identify these thoughts and be strong enough to push through them. I can’t say I am very good at it, but I am making an effort to be more conscious and counteract negativity with positive self talk. I’ll get there eventually.
I’ll leave this post with one more J.K Rowling quote from ‘Harry Potter’:
“It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.”
